Denyse Selesnick, CEM

The word "entrepreneur" best describes Denyse-although her friends, family and clients thought she was a little too adventurous (being caught in the war in El Salvador in the early 90's while doing a series of seminars on "How to Export to the U.S."). Strikes, earthquakes, wars, kidnapping threats, a huge circle of friends and colleagues and some great trade shows--- are hallmarks of many years in the international exhibition industry.

She was born in England and immigrated with her parents to California as a child. While grew up in Los Angeles, Denyse wanted to pursue a career in journalism specializing as a foreign correspondent. Instead, she ended up owning a publishing company covering the apparel manufacturing industry, launching trade shows and a Latin American Spanish language trade magazine in the same industry.

In 1973 she organized her first exhibition "The WAM SHOW" for the apparel manufacturing industry at the then new Los Angeles Convention Center. Later that year, while on an NAEM (formerly known as IAEM, now IAEE) post-convention tour that same year, she had the opportunity to speak with the Mexican Clothing Association.

They invited her to replicate the Los Angeles WAM Show in Mexico City. It took two years to get organized and was finally held in June 1975 . . . the first international trade show ever held in Mexico. Denyse subsequently has organized some 50+ exhibitions in Mexico.

She sold the U.S. publications and the WAM Show to Shore Publications (Atlanta) in the early 80's to concentrate on the growing opportunities in Latin America. Unfortunately that was the time the Latin American economy burst and a major earthquake devastated the apparel and textile industry within Mexico. In 1991, the apparel-oriented publications and trade shows were sold to Blenheim Holdings through the Bobbin division in South Carolina.

Also during the 1980's, President Reagan appointed Denyse to a three-year term on the Caribbean Basin Business Promotion Council after the passage of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (forerunner to NAFTA). Its mandate was to assist Caribbean and Central American countries expand their exports into the U.S. market.

Denyse has been active in now IAEE since 1972 (still has a '72 coffee mug) and has served a variety of positions including Chair of the Southern California region, Chair of the NAEM International Committee, and been a member of the Education and Long Term Planning Committees. She is a recognized industry speaker, having given numerous seminars and participated on many panels during the last 36 years.

She joined SISO in its early stages and has been a member for more than 19 years, serving on the Board of Directors and Chaired the SISO Executive Conferences in Rhode Island and Boston.

Denyse has been involved in various religious and community organizations and currently is on the Greater Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce International Committee. She lives in Tarzana, CA with her dog Mackie and has four children, three in-law children and six grandchildren.
