Acapulco (AMPROFEC) Blog

The hot and humid summer world tour continued...this time to Acapulco, Mexico AMPROFEC is the Mexican association for tradeshow organizers, venues and suppliers. Heres some quick background on my relationship with the wonderful, magical and frustrating country down south we did tradeshows here for years, had an office in Mexico City then in Guadalajara. The director and asst director of the venue where we held one of our shows for since 1992 went into partnership with an ex-employee and started a competitive show and screwed us on dates. (Who it turns out slept with quite a few exhibitors I thought she was a really good salesperson, but never expected her to give it her all if you know what I mean) We moved the show to another city, but it was never the same. Oh well. Who me bitter? Na. Ok. Maybe a little.

Anyway, its been 3 years since Ive been back to Mexico. One of the men I was on a panel with in Atlanta a few weeks ago told me it was time to come back to Mexico. And the chance to go to Acapulco to re-enter the country sounded pretty good to me!

Flew in through Mexico City and landed in the new Terminal 2. Gorgeous. Had a two hour layover that became a 3+ wait. Finally boarded and took off. Some of the worst flights Ive ever had have been from Mexico City to Acapulco. Essentially you go up, over some mountains, then straight down and land 45 minutes of turbulence. Only this time none! The Aeromexico crew were great I counted 5 apologies for our delay and they actually got everyone drinks before we landed! Far better attitude and service than some U.S. carriers...

Took a taxi to the Pierre Marques Hotel and was given a lovely Jr. Suite with an ocean view and a huge deck off to the side that had a bar. No booze in the bar, but a bar. Why do I always get the cool rooms when Im alone? Go figure. Went to the hotel bar for a drink. I was the ONLY person in the bar. There were absolutely no people around. Fairly surreal. Gorgeous night with waves crashing, humidity and phenomenal service that Mexico is known for.

Had a free day spent it by the pool reading some trash, then worked out. Why do luxury hotels charge for using the gym? This hotel was not the only one.TheHotel in Las Vegas charges $25 A DAY. By the way there were all of 4 people using the pool. Thats right 4. Including me. Very nice! Alas, no rafts were available to make it complete. The piña coladas helped me get over the lack of a raft.

The conference began with a Las Vegas themed cocktail party. It was fun playing craps but I still have no idea how the hell to play that game. Spoke Spanish. Well tried to speak Spanish but boy am I rusty! So I spoke perfect Spanglish instead. Ran into quite a few people I knew, which was excellent.

The conference was held at the Mundo Imperial, a phenomenal convention center/theater/hotel complex that opens in the next few months. Located a few kilometers from the Acapulco Airport, all I can say is WOW. It's gorgeous! The conference itself was excellent - great content, relevant topics and amazing food functions. Can't wait for next year - in Zacatecas...
