November 17 2008 Denyse C. SelesnickI thought I was the only one going through election withdrawal! I have calluses on my hand from switching between CNN, MSNBC and .....FOX. Apparently I am not alone. What happens after all the conjecture about Cabinet and White House Offices? At least the guessing game continues for a couple of weeks. I remember when John Kennedy was elected. I'm older now (much) so the feelings stirred by this election are infused with a certain amount of maturity but watching Grant Park in Chicago election night was one of those special moments in time. We now have a new generation of leaders. Hopefully with ideas and points of view that will be good for this country. We are also looking at a new generation of would-be leaders in our industry. That is if the old guard decides to move over. Some of the Industry Associations seem to want the status quo. "If it ain't broke-don't fix it" attitude. On the other hand... new ideas, projects, launches have helped a lot of companies through the tough times. I think that associations have to provide member benefits that are real benefits and not just window dressing. When times are good there is a tendency to be complacent. Some of the associations in this industry are going to the same feeding trough time and time again. It's the age of realistic expectations, excellent member services, outstanding programming and a dues structure that isn't predicated how much can the market bear. Denyse's Blog |
